We were worried the set on this page hadn’t survived! It took many years to surface all six pieces. But below, feast your eyes on the original prototypes for the six old face teddies with color patches that went on to be used for production! Old face White with brown patch, cranberry patch, teal patch, jade patch, magenta patch, and violet patch.
It was when an old face teddy in solid white with patch showed up for auction in 2003/2004 (protogate era) – listed by Steve Cohen (Pac Man Beans) that eyes were opened to these particular original prototypes. It was among the most exciting vintage prototypes we had ever seen. The piece was the embodiment of what an original prototype could be. We have a number of posts up with teddies with alternate color patches (all magnificent), but these are the only old face white prototype teddies to surface with the exact color patches for their production counterparts.
Rarity Rank: 0. 1st generation prototypes. Complete departure from eventual production counterparts. Original 1992 pax tags (10/15/92). The exact color matches for their eventual famous production counterparts. Mint pax hang and pax tush tags. And the FULL set has survived! Again, pieces you could argue into a higher rarity rank. These are technically the original prototypes for the original teddy bears in the beanie line.
