We outlined the production version of Mitya – the red Russian bear given out at the 2017 Kids Russia Toy Fair. Only about 50 examples were made, with 10-15 pieces rescued. Here we have the three known prototypes for that piece. Again, recall Ty’s intense focus on symmetry. The Russian flag is comprised of three colors, hence it makes symmetrical sense for Ty to have created three examples – one in each flag color.
Example #1 in solid blue with red nose and ribbons, red and white chest embroidery
Example #2 in the production red, with solid blue nose, ribbons, and blue and white embroidery
Example #3 in white, with red and blue embroidery, Russian flag nose, and ribbons.
All three examples have the Ty Inc prototype square hang tag – signed by Ty, with sample prototype tush tags. This set was brought forward by a Ty Executive from the Abu Dhabi office. Especially given the current geopolitical travesty we currently face with Russia, it’s fair to say Mitya, and any pieces from the Russian market, are impossible to extract. So whatever has made it out, that’s it!
Rarity Rank: -.5 to -1. While Mitya does not resonate with collectors focused solely on early vintage (the only factor holding these pieces back from a -1 ranking), these bears are FULL and complete, vivid departures from a production piece that is one of the most coveted and underappreciated rare production pieces in the hobby. While the red prototype example on its own is not a wild departure, the set together is striking. As Mitya’s rarity and demand appreciates (we anticipate Chef level value shortly), the interest, mystery, and sadness around this style and these prototypes will only grow. A production example in mint condition will still come with a multi-thousand dollar price tag.
